Omega special editions for Paris 2024
Fernando AldeaAs is customary every four years, Omega launched its traditional special editions for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Spoiler alert: we're not very impressed. Join us as we break down these releases with our signature touch of passion and honest criticism.
Olympic Omega
Since 1932, the Biel/Bienne-based company has been the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, marking nearly a century of precision and excellence in sports timekeeping. Over the years, Omega has introduced countless technological innovations such as Photo Finish and the electric chronometer, revolutionizing timekeeping in the world of sports. But we're not here to pat them on the back. At each edition of the Games, Omega releases special watches that, in theory, should capture the spirit of the event. For Paris 2024, things have fallen rather short.
For these Olympic Games, Omega has released just two special editions: a Seamaster Diver 300M and a Speedmaster Chronoscope in four variations. Both pieces certainly reflect Parisian elegance and heritage, and also feature unique details that gracefully celebrate this global event, but we still believe it's a poor performance. Especially for Omega.
Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Paris 2024
The first special edition watch is the Seamaster Diver 300M Paris 2024, a timepiece that strives to be elegant and sophisticated. This model has a white ceramic dial with engraved waves and Moonshine yellow gold details, a hue that, according to Omega, is inspired by “the glow of the moon at night.” Very poetic. But the truth is, it’s 18k yellow gold, a bit paler. Now, we can’t deny that the gold ceramic bezel and the Moonshine gold hands and markers add that touch of luxury expected in a high-end sports watch made for a special occasion.
On the back, we find a medallion with the Paris 2024 logo in gold—we love the logo that uses a flame to make the face of a Parisian lady appear. The watch is also water-resistant to 300 meters, has a helium escape valve, and features an Omega caliber 8800 automatic movement with a 55-hour power reserve. Perfect for when you're taking a giant plunge in your own pool. Limited Edition, ladies and gentlemen, only 2,024 pieces.
Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024
Now, let's talk about the Speedmaster Chronoscope, another attempt by Omega to impress us with its special editions. Available in four versions: steel with steel and steel with perforated black leather, this watch features Moonshine gold accents on the hands and markers. Oh, and there's also a full gold version and one in gold with black leather, because there's always someone willing to pay more for that extra bling.
The black aluminum bezel and the triple scale on the dial add a classic touch, or so they say. On the back, the commemorative medallion reminds us that we're wearing something special. Of course, this is also a limited edition of 2,024 pieces, so if you're one of those who need to feel exclusive, this is your moment. Technical specifications: 43 mm case (too big), scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and manual Omega caliber 9908 movement with a 60-hour power reserve.
Our opinion
This is where we get serious. Omega's Paris 2024 special editions have generated mixed reviews. Some criticize the limited color palette and the lack of models in other Omega lines. Where's the diversity we saw at Tokyo 2020? The Seamaster Diver 300M, compared to the vibrant design of the Rio Seamaster, looks like the all-singing, all-dancing sibling. The Paris version, with its focus on gold and white hues, attempts to capture the city's elegance, but some fans were hoping for something bolder.
The million-dollar question: Are these models worth the investment? Priced higher than standard models thanks to their limited edition and unique details—$8,700 for the 300M, $9,500/$9,800 for the steel Chronoscope, and $32,700/$51,400 for the Moonshine—the decision is yours. These watches celebrate a global event and carry a piece of Olympic history with them. Or at least, that's what the brand hopes will happen.
Omega's Paris 2024 special editions aim to be a blend of tradition, history, and a touch of Parisian elegance. However, the lack of variety and the feeling that Omega didn't put its best foot forward leaves us with a bittersweet taste this time around. Were you impressed?
