It has maintained its core design philosophy: black bezel, black dial, large markers, and the iconic Oyster bracelet. Any evolution has been subtle, as Rolex has chosen to maintain the core style it pioneered, which has since become the primary influence for the entire diving watch genre. Introduced in 1987 as one of Rolex's first five-digit references, the ref. 16610 marked the next generation of the iconic Submariner upon its debut, and is significantly regarded as one of the first modern Rolex Submariner references, breaking with the previous vintage era. Featuring Rolex's latest case design, an aluminum bezel, and improved water resistance to 300 meters (up from 200 meters), the 40mm by 13mm diver's watch once again demonstrated why the Crown has long led the market in combining iconic design with gradual technological improvements. On the dial, a highly legible dial is displayed in Rolex's distinctive diver configuration, complete with a magnified date window at three o'clock, lume-coated hour markers and hands, and a contrasting dark dial. As offered from 1987 until the 2000s, the ref. 16610 Submariner embraces the change in the crown from tritium to LumiNova luminous material. Early examples will patinate like a vintage watch, while later, after approximately 1997, the numerals, hour markers, and hands will remain vivid white. Inside, the 16610 is powered by Rolex’s calibre 3135, an automatic movement with a 48-hour power reserve—an incredibly reliable, chronometer-grade movement used extensively by the brand. The calibre is protected by a solid caseback that helps ensure water resistance to 300 meters (1,000 feet), and the entire watch is secured to the wrist by a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with a matching safety clasp to prevent accidental opening.
