The story of the GMT-Master II begins in 1983 with ref. 16760, also known as the "Fat Lady" due to its increased case thickness compared to previous GMTs. This increase was necessary due to the first major update to the GMT-Master movement in its production series. Caliber 3085 allowed the main 12-hour hand to jump forward or backward in one-hour increments without the movement stopping, representing a significant technical improvement. Debuted in 1989 and featured in the Rolex catalog until 2007, the GMT Master-II ref. 16710 is arguably one of the finest examples of the iconic crown brand’s transition from the 20th to the 21st century. Featuring a streamlined 40mm by 12.5mm steel base compared to its bulky predecessor, the ref. 16760, the 16710 defined an entire era of GMT Master-II watches with its iconic Pepsi bezel and highly legible dial, paving the way for even further updates to the classic design in the decades that followed. In terms of Rolex design history, the 16710 may be best known as the watch that marked a significant shift in the luminous material used by the brand in its watches, from tritium to Luminova and later to Superluminova. As such, early examples of the 16710 with tritium will patinate like a vintage watch, while those made after approximately 1997 use Luminova and those after 2000 use Superluminova, and their numerals, hour markers, and hands will remain stark white for many years to come. This effort toward technological improvement in the 16710—first in the thinness of the case and then in the luminescent material of the dial—laid the groundwork for even more significant updates to the GMT-Master II line with the 2007 successor to the ref. 116710. In the 116710, the brand redesigned several elements of the model with the addition of a Triplock crown, anti-reflective Cyclops lens, green 24-hour hand, a maxi dial with a Rolex engraving on the inner dial, and a ceramic bezel, as well as a new bracelet and movement. However, while many of the now-appreciated updates arrived with the 116710, the 16710 remains the watch that set the standard, while maintaining much of the same beloved charm that has endeared countless millions to the brand.
