Rolex Datejust 36 mm 16233 Steel and Yellow Gold

Two-tone is always a bit controversial, but those who like it, love it. This is the case with the Rolex Datejust ref. 16233, which, while easily loved for its Datejust qualities, is a true stunner with its yellow gold bezel and crown against its famous 36mm stainless steel Oyster case. The ref. 16233 was one of the first five-digit offerings within the Datejust family and, more importantly, one of the first to also utilize a sapphire crystal. First offered from 1988 until the mid-2000s, the 16233 introduced several notable improvements to the design family, including the addition of the brand's patented "jumping date," which changed instantaneously at midnight rather than over the course of the last few hours, as was the case with previous Datejust iterations. Additionally, within the five-digit era, references beginning with 162XX (like this one) can be found with the newer caliber 3135, while references 160XX use the older caliber 3035—a small detail worth paying attention to. As offered from 1988 until the mid-2000s, the ref. 16233 Datejust encompasses the change in the crown from tritium to LumiNova luminous material. Early examples will patinate like a vintage watch, while later, after around 1997, the numerals, hour markers, and hands will remain white. Unless your Datejust uses diamond indexes, which, as the saying goes, are timeless.
