In 2017, Rado reissued its 1962 Captain Cook diver's watch. It was a resounding success, and Rado has since modernized the Captain Cook, as evidenced by this feature-packed diver's watch in a beautiful blue color and contemporary 42mm case. The rotating bezel is a pleasure to turn. Large, concave, and protruding slightly from the case edge, this bezel sounds and feels as good as it looks. Surprisingly legible underwater, the engraved ceramic insert is scratch-resistant and pairs perfectly with the radially brushed blue dial. The bright white markers and hands are filled with Super-LumiNova for superior visibility underwater or in any low-light scenario. The original Captain Cook was only 37mm in diameter, and by adding an extra half-centimeter to the watch, Rado has taken a risk that the design wouldn't work at these dimensions. We're delighted to report that the Captain Cook design remains at 42mm, and we attribute this to the elemental shapes used in this classic mid-century design, so clearly influenced not only by the persistent Bauhaus aesthetic of the 1960s, but also by the Pop Art movement dominating Europe at the time.
