Panerai's ability to continually innovate within the confines of its DNA is evident with the PAM 312. There are some watches, but not many, that are as instantly recognizable as a Panerai with its cushion case. On this PAM 312, the brushed and polished case measures 44 mm, has straight lugs, and features the recognizable lever-crown closure. Of course, the true star of a Panerai is its dial, and the PAM 312 doesn't disappoint. The sandwich dial construction extends to the small seconds subdial at nine o'clock; opposite is a matching black date window with lume-filled elements that echo the accents consistently seen on the dial and hands. In traditional Panerai fashion, the dial opts for large Arabic numerals only at the remaining three-quarter hours, with simpler markers at each remaining position, while a pair of lume-filled hands sweep steadily above and determine the running time. The P.9000 automatic movement that powers this watch offers three days of power reserve and operates at 4 Hz. Fortunately, Panerai showcases this movement via an exhibition caseback. The PAM 312 is surprisingly understated for a Panerai. We appreciate the use of tan Super-LumiNova and the yellowish text as a respectful nod to the Italian giant's history.
