Omega Flightmaster Chronograph ST 145.036 Vintage

Omega introduced the Flightmaster ref. 145.013 in 1969. It was marketed as a pure and innovative pilot's watch with an independently adjustable second time zone function and an AM/PM indicator for pilots crisscrossing the globe. Shortly before the watch's launch, commercial aviation opened jet travel to the growing middle class. The Flightmaster was the horological response to this technological explosion. The third generation of Omega's Flightmaster arrived in the catalog in 1973 with the ref. 145.036, like the example we have here today. Omega made four different variations of the Flightmaster during the model's production run, from approximately 1969 to 1977; three of these references would be made in steel and one in solid gold. What differentiates the third generation Flightmaster from the first is the inclusion of a running subsidiary register at nine o'clock, similar to the one on the second generation ref. 145.026. Omega swapped the AM/PM indicator for a continuously running seconds register. This generation is designated "911" and uses a modified caliber 861 movement. The running seconds indicator is visually similar to the Speedmaster, but that's no surprise because functionally, the watches are quite similar. Also, like the Speedmaster, the Flightmaster has a spatial connection. Just as the Speedmaster was NASA's favorite, the Flightmaster was the favorite of ROSCOSMOS, the Soviet space agency. The watch we are discussing today is in good and attractive overall condition, but what distinguishes this particular example is its sheer originality. The crown at ten o'clock adjusts the blue airplane-shaped second time zone hand, and the crown at 8:30 turns the inner bezel. Reference 145.036 was offered with red and yellow chronograph hands; our example is red. The color combination gives this watch a unique look. It's a bold piece, but, especially with its Omega bracelet, it wears very well on the wrist.
