Watch Angels x Frederique Constant Worldtimer Manufacture
Fernando AldeaFrederique Constant continues to evolve and consolidate its identity in the watchmaking industry. Since becoming a manufacturer, it has proven its ability to offer high-level complications at affordable prices.
Their latest collaboration with Watch Angels, the Worldtimer Manufacture FCWA.718.SS.2.1.1, is proof of this. This limited edition introduces a completely new 40.5 mm case, a reduction from the line's usual 42 mm, achieving a more refined and balanced aesthetic. It's an ambitious undertaking for the brand, which continues to raise its game without losing its focus on affordable luxury.
The redesign is not only evident in the case but also in the dial, which eliminates the traditional world map in favor of a cleaner, more modern look. The configuration includes a dark blue sunburst finish, with matte rings for the 24-hour scale and cities. Instead of the classic date display at 6 o'clock, it now has a minimalist design where a small golden sun marks noon and a silver moon indicates midnight. All of this reinforces superior legibility, a key feature of any watch with a worldtimer function.
Another significant change is in the indexes and hands, which are rhodium-plated and lack luminescent treatment, moving away from the sportier style of its collection siblings. This gives it a more elegant and sophisticated character, although it may disappoint those who prefer greater visibility in the dark. Furthermore, the brand has opted to print its logo on the dial rather than applying it, along with a discreet central cross that adds symmetry without detracting from the design's clarity. It's a watch that seeks to be timeless and versatile, without losing the functional essence of a worldtimer.
Under the hood, we find the proven in-house caliber FC-718, which operates at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a 38-hour power reserve. This movement stands out for its ability to adjust all settings directly from the crown, without the need for additional pushers, simplifying its use and maintaining its sleek aesthetic. The transparent caseback reveals its gold-plated skeletonized rotor and Geneva wave and perlage finishes. This detail elevates the user experience, although it still doesn't compete with the more handcrafted decorations of higher-end brands.
As for the strap, it comes mounted on a black leather strap with a folding clasp, a somewhat conservative choice considering its blue dial, although the standard 20mm lug width makes it easy to swap it for more personalized options. Priced at CHF 4,490 (approx. $4,900 USD) and limited to 718 pieces (for the FC-718 caliber), this Manufacture Worldtimer is a smart move by Frederique Constant. It moves into a higher price category for the brand, but remains one of the most accessible options among Swiss Worldtimers. A step forward that shows FC is increasingly confident in its manufacture and its future.
