A Streamliner in gold and black

Fernando Aldea

Following the all-steel version, H. Moser & Cie. is presenting a red gold Streamliner equipped with the Manufacture's automatic caliber with flying tourbillon.

The refined aesthetic of this model, an ode to minimalism, complements the complexity of the movement and the materials used. In a grand play of contrasts, H. Moser & Cie. distills the very essence of the tourbillon —a traditional mechanism in Haute Horlogerie —in this model, combining it with Vantablack® , an innovative coating used in astrophysics and borrowed from the aeronautical industry. Minimalist, ultra-modern, and timeless, this is the new Streamliner Tourbillon Vantablack® by H. Moser & Cie.

For this version of the Streamliner, H. Moser & Cie. has chosen to embellish all of the model's rounded curves with red gold, from its cushion-shaped case to its integrated bracelet with articulated links. To achieve the finishes typical of the Streamliner collection , meticulous polishing and satin-finishing was required on the adjacent surfaces, as the transitions between different types of finish had to be imperceptible. The 5N red gold, with a vertical satin finish alternating between satin-brushed and polished lines, highlights the deep black of the Vantablack® dial, a contrast between materials intensified by the red gold indexes on the dial, like rays of light emerging from the densest darkness.

Moser has achieved a true technical feat by managing to position the indexes from the back so that, depending on the angle, they appear to appear or disappear immersed in Vantablack® , a material created in 2012 for which the Manufacture has developed a true predilection and which it has learned to master over the years. This super-deep black coating in Vantablack® —a material famous for being the darkest substance in existence—is also used in fields such as astrophysics, in telescopes; in military settings as thermal camouflage to increase the concealment level of certain equipment; and in civilian contexts, for solar panels.

It is composed of juxtaposed carbon nanostructures. When a photon hits Vantablack® , the material absorbs 99.965% of the light. And since our eyes require reflected light to perceive what they're looking at, the material visually appears as if it were a hollow space devoid of matter. To successfully process a material like this—protected behind its corresponding sapphire crystal—H. Moser & Cie. has had to create special equipment and develop special processes.

The one-minute flying tourbillon at 6 o'clock, which appears to float in the middle of a black hole, is the soul of this watch. This self-winding HMC 804 caliber is equipped with a double hairspring designed and manufactured in-house by Moser's sister company, Precision Engineering AG . Thanks to these paired hairsprings, the displacement of the center of gravity in each spring is corrected when it expands and the effect of friction is reduced, significantly improving precision and isochronism.

The stunning Streamliner Tourbillon Vantablack ® , and its advanced technology, is a unique take on Haute Horlogerie, unique to H. Moser & Cie.
