Omega: Small device, huge change

Fernando Aldea

From record-breaking deep-sea dives to moon landings, Omega's legacy is filled with large-scale achievements. The first of this year's major accomplishments is, in fact, quite small.

Omega's latest Speedmaster is precision-tuned thanks to the Spirate ™ System, which features a revolutionary new, patent-pending hairspring that allows for ultra-fine rate adjustments. Thanks to this unique mechanism, Omega can now achieve certified accuracy of just 0/+2 seconds per day.

To achieve these goals, Omega had to literally reinvent the wheel, drawing on both the technical resources of the Swatch Group and the precision, stability, and reliability of Omega's chronometrically superior in-house movements.

The innovative solution was a completely new Si14 hairspring, which allows the watchmaker to adjust the rigidity of the hairspring's attachment point using an eccentric adjustment mechanism located on the balance bridge. This new approach, based on the design of a high-precision articulated structure with flexible bearings, is a magnificent example of Omega's commitment to new ideas: to progress by taking on challenges.

The 44.25 mm Speedmaster Super Racing is the world's first watch to feature the Spirate ™ System: Omega's fine-tuning balance wheel mechanism. Its elegant exterior pays tribute to the 10th anniversary of the Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 Gauss launched in 2013.

Omega's pioneering journey into inner space has resulted in a new anti-magnetic balance spring with optimal geometry for precision adjustment. The Spirate™ System features a revolutionary new patented balance spring that allows for ultra-fine cadence adjustments. Thanks to this unique mechanism, Omega can achieve a certified accuracy of 0/+2 seconds per day.

As a nod to antimagnetism, the honeycomb-pattern sandwich dial pays homage to the concept watch that survived 160,000 gauss, while the black and yellow striped hand on the 9 o'clock subdial is a nod to the Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 Gauss. The diamond-polished, beveled, black arrowhead indexes are filled with yellow Super-LumiNova, which emits a yellow glow. This color coding extends to the Speedmaster and Super Racing inscriptions on the dial.

On the Speedmaster Super Racing, a black ceramic bezel ring with a tachymeter scale in yellow "grand feu" enamel surrounds the honeycomb dial, which features the characteristic racing-style minute track. The date window at 6 o'clock displays an elegant, recurring reminder of the 2013 launch of the Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 Gauss. A special number 10 with the Speedmaster logo appears once a month.

The Speedmaster Super Racing is powered by the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 9920, featuring the new Spirate™ system. Both the movement and the assembled watch undergo the most stringent tests in the industry to ensure the highest levels of performance, precision, and magnetic resistance.

Omega's new movement is a self-winding chronograph with a column wheel and Co-Axial escapement. It is Master Chronometer certified, METAS approved, and resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. It includes the new Spirate™ system for fine-tuning the rate, as well as two series-mounted barrels and a time zone function. It features central hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands, a small seconds subdial, and 12-hour and 60-minute registers. Its finish is rhodium-plated with a Geneva arabesque waves.
