OMEGA Days 2022: Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep

Fernando Aldea

Omega's home is vast and deep. Let us take you to the deepest place on the planet to discover the record-breaking new Planet Ocean and the depth-defying collection it inspired.

A powerful continuation of Omega's diving legacy.

In 2019, the first Ultra Deep watches made history by reaching the deepest point on Earth. In 2022, the technology that made the dive possible was transformed into a revolutionary 6,000-meter collection for everyone. It features 45.5 mm models with high-performance materials and patent-pending designs that represent the pinnacle of Omega's dive watch heritage.

90 years underwater

Omega, a pioneer in the maritime world, began its history with the oceans in 1932 with the "Omega Marine," the first diving watch for civilian divers. Distinguished by its brilliant double-case design, this watch's superior water resistance made it coveted by the most ambitious explorers and paved the way for the brand's future in the diving world.

With the launch of the first Seamaster in 1948, Omega's passion for the sea was rekindled, leading to the launch of the Seamaster 300 in 1957: Omega's first professional diving watch. Since then, many legendary diving watches have followed, such as the distinctive Seamaster 600M "Ploprof" , the Seamaster 1000 for long-range exploration, or the famous Seamaster Diver 300M , which Commander James Bond wore on his wrist since 1995.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep

The original Ultra Deep

The original Ultra Deep watch, consolidating Omega’s impressive expertise in the oceanic realm, arrived in 2019. To withstand the harshest conditions, this cutting-edge timepiece included indestructible features, such as a case entirely crafted from forged Grade 5 titanium, durable “Manta” lugs that innovatively protect the watch, and a sapphire dial with a tapered design inspired by the visor mount on a submarine.

In April of the same year, Victor Vescovo undertook a mission in which he dived to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean accompanied by three Ultra Deep watches. This depth, originally recorded as 10,925 meters (35,843 ft), was later updated to 10,935 meters (35,876 ft): the deepest depth ever dived by a human or a watch. Two of these watches were attached to the submarine's robotic arm, while the third was attached to a data collection module. Thanks to their ingenious design and construction, all three watches completed the full 12-hour dive without incident and returned to the surface completely intact.

The new titanium model

Taking a further step forward in cutting-edge ocean designs, seven new models in the Ultra Deep collection will be introduced in 2022. The range of 45.5 mm models, water resistant to 6,000 meters (20,000 feet), is headlined by a bold sandblasted Grade 5 titanium version.

To give it a unique character, the watch is equipped with a brushed ceramic bezel with a Liquidmetal™ diving scale, as well as the distinctive "Manta" lugs and a restrained asymmetrical case reminiscent of the original Ultra Deep. These lugs hold a black and cyan-blue striped NATO strap, crafted from polyamide derived from recycled fishing nets, with a grade 5 titanium ring and buckle.

Beneath the prominent, convex sapphire crystal is a ceramized black titanium dial with cyan blue numerals and a blue gradient on the central seconds hand.

Turning the watch over reveals a laser-engraved Sonar logo with the iconic Omega seahorse in the center on the grade 5 titanium caseback. Also featured is the inscription “Diver's watch 6000 m for saturation diving,” reinforcing the watch's adventurous nature.

Six models in the Ultra Deep collection have been crafted with the innovative O-MEGASTEEL material. This high-performance noble steel alloy once again demonstrates Omega's leadership in the production of advanced materials with qualities that exceed conventional standards. O-MEGASTEEL stands out for its superior strength, lighter color, and unparalleled shine. It also boasts exceptional corrosion resistance to maintain its long-lasting, pristine appearance.

Each symmetrical case made of this type of steel features a ceramic bezel with a diving scale, as well as a prominent, convex sapphire crystal, carefully beveled and designed for maximum resistance under pressure. A new crown guard has also been integrated into the case to ensure safety at great depths.

The various dial options include white or gradient dials, which transition from gray to black or blue to black, and include a polished finish, as well as 18K white gold hands and indexes. Each model is fitted with a grade 5 titanium caseback with the same laser-engraved Sonar logo and script as the full titanium model.

Each model is completed with a rubber strap or an O-MEGASTEEL bracelet. The rubber straps feature a technical wetsuit construction on the upper surface, along with a buckle made of this steel. For the metal bracelets, Omega's patented push-button folding clasp with length adjustment and additional diving extension is included, ideal for use around a thick wetsuit.

Depth tested and certified

All watches in this collection, powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 8912, are Master Chronometer certified to Switzerland's highest standards of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance. Additionally, the Omega Ultra Deep was tested in ocean waters at a depth of 6,269 meters (20,567 feet) in the Mariana Trench in 2021.

It also includes the "For Saturation Diving" inscription in accordance with the ISO 6425 standard for saturation diving watches, certified by the independent Swiss testing body METAS, a first in the watch industry.
