The new Mido Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer Special Edition

Fernando Aldea

The Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer combines neo-vintage style, cutting-edge technology, and a GMT function. Featuring a decompression table and world time bezel, Mido takes this legendary timepiece to new heights with two special editions.

The Ocean Star Skin Diver Watch, an innovative timepiece created in the 1960s, used a multi-color scale to indicate decompression times. The latest version, the Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer, maintains the vintage charm of its predecessor and takes it to new heights with the addition of an additional time zone. Mido has utilized the latest technologies in its ongoing pursuit of excellence, including Super-LumiNova®, a glass-box sapphire crystal, and the formidable Caliber 80 with Nivachron™ hairspring and GMT function. The watch also includes an easily replaceable additional strap.

The screw-down caseback features an engraved starfish to underline Mido's historic achievements in water resistance, both in 1934 with its Aquadura system and now with this new model, water-resistant to a pressure of 20 bar (200 m/660 ft). This watch is enough to revive the diving spirit of the 1960s, pushing the boundaries, testing the limits of jet lag and the waves themselves.

The original applied and polished Mido logo stands out on the watch dial. This latest piece pays homage to the famous Ocean Star Skin Diver Watch of the 1960s, displaying decompression times to a depth of 6 meters using yellow, green, pink, and blue circles. The rotating bezel, fitted with a blue aluminum ring, features the world's largest cities marked in silver. A red arrow indicates the travel time zone, contrasting with the flat, diamond-cut hour, minute, and second hands for "home time."

The Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer is designed to withstand any conditions and do so in style. The polished stainless steel case is strong and durable, with a very practical diameter of 40.5 mm. The model is complemented by a navy blue rubber strap with a texture inspired by 1960s fashion. An ingenious system allows the strap to be changed in a snap, and replaced with a second Milanese mesh strap. The screw-down caseback and crown contribute to its water resistance to 200 meters and protect the caliber 80 from water damage.

The exceptional dial is protected by a "crystal box" sapphire crystal reminiscent of the plexiglass used at the time. The Swiss automatic movement, equipped with a GMT function, boasts a generous power reserve of up to 80 hours and a Nivachron™ hairspring that provides exceptional resistance to magnetism and shocks, making it particularly durable.
