The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph will forever be known as the chronograph of choice for some of the finest Formula 1 teams and drivers. The timeless design, born in 1963, has taken on many celebrated expressions, but the yellow gold pieces in this collection always stand out. With its sophisticated, jet-black dial, the 2022 gold edition continues to expand this rich lineage of legendary racing watches.
The Carrera Chrono was designed for the racetrack thanks to its highly legible and uncluttered dial, elegant lines, and high-performance movements. In 1970, the first yellow gold automatic models were introduced, the Heuer reference 1158 CHN, which were a personal favorite of then CEO Jack Heuer. They quickly became a must-have on the grid as a sign of success, following Jack's strategy of gifting them to many winning drivers. They remain highly coveted by enthusiasts and collectors eager to own a piece of the unmistakable glamorous spirit of 1970s racing, synonymous with the most famous names in motorsport during this incredible period.
TAG Heuer continues to build on this unique heritage and introduces a never-before-seen dial design, black with gold subdials, a reverse version of the famous Heuer reference 1158 CHN. Connoisseurs might also recognize the two-tone palette from the legendary John Player Special livery, which stood out in Formula 1 in the 1970s and 1980s. The Lotus 98T of Ayrton Senna, TAG Heuer ambassador and world champion, wore the famous livery early in his glittering career.
Today's special edition combines TAG Heuer's enduring support and love for motorsports with the early achievements of one of the brand's key ambassadors to offer a striking interpretation of the timeless chronograph. The classic 42 mm case is crafted from solid 18K 3N yellow gold, with gold pushers and crown. The rich black sunray-brushed dial brings sophistication, depth, and a subtle play of light to the wrist.
Two azuré and gold-tone chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock contrast with the deep black dial. At 6 o'clock, a discreet permanent seconds display and a date window complete the harmonious arrangement of the tricompax. The indexes and hands are plated in 18K 3N yellow gold and polished, enhancing the dial's legibility and elegance.
The case back features a sapphire crystal through which the movement and the customized black oscillating weight are clearly visible. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph is powered by the Calibre Heuer 02, the brand's chronograph movement. With its vertical clutch and column wheel, it offers exceptional precision and timekeeping performance, as well as an 80-hour power reserve. The piece is presented on an oversized black alligator strap with a gold-tone pin buckle.
The black and gold design is as appealing a combination today as it was in the 1970s.
